The Story of Mr. Dog
From Baby's Perspective
February 2001

One morning our Momma was sitting at her computer, as she usually does in the mornings, when we all heard a car honking out in the street.  We all ran to the door with Momma following to see what was going on.  There was a van sitting in the street and a little white dog in the road in front of the van, just sitting there.  Momma went outside and realized she knew the lady in the van, so she went out to talk to her.  The little white dog was covered in big grass burrs and had blood on his belly.  He was also very dirty and stinky.  Fearing that he had been hit by a car, Momma told the lady she would take him to the vet to be looked at.  She wouldn't let us see him though, so we were very anxious and curious about the doggy.

Momma took the dog, a boy, to the vet and discovered that he had not been hit by a car, but that the big grass burrs stuck in his long hair were cutting him under the belly.  Some of them had even become lodged in his skin.  Feeling sorry for the poor doggy, she agreed to let the vet clean him up, which meant they had to shave him completely because his hair was so messed up and there was no other way to get rid of all the grass burrs.  The vet decided that Mr. Dog was a pekingese mix most likey.

When Momma came home, they didn't have the doggy with them, but later we found out that she was waiting for him to get cleaned up before she picked him up.  We were all very excited when he came home later that afternoon.  It is fun to have a new doggy in the house.   Maddie and I sniffed and checked out the new dog, whom Momma called Mr. Dog.  She made some "Found" signs to put up around the neighborhood.  The picture at the top is the one she used to make his sign.

After 2 weeks, we did not get any calls about Mr. Dog.  During that time, he became part of the family, so to speak.  He even slept in Momma's bed with the rest of us!  He wouldn't have it any other way.  He was pretty much house-trained, although he did have a couple of accidents in the house.  Eventually Momma decided they were not going to find Mr. Dog's owners, so Maddie and I thought we were going to get to keep him.  Some people from church decided they wanted him (the lady in the van from before), and now he lives with them.  He has become a part of their family and is very happy in his new home.

I was so glad that Momma got to help out Mr. Dog.  I think if they had just called the pound he would not be in a happy, loving home right now.  So next time you see a doggy in need, please help him out.  Some doggies can't help themselves.
